Cassandra Rivera is a Mentor and Career Pathways Coordinator for Best Buy Teen Tech Center @ Gold Crown Clubhouse (

What is your earliest memory of being a maker?

I remember starting to make things before I even started school. When I was three-years old, my mom taught me how to sew using a needle and thread. I quickly applied my new skills to making Barbie Doll outfits and sock pillows!

What do you like most about being a maker?

Being able to bring my most creative and innovative ideas to life!

What’s your big, audacious goal?

Help different organizations actively incorporate maker culture into their workplace. Maker culture is awesome because it promotes a positive growth mindset and uses project-based learning, collaboration, and innovation.

What do you want to accomplish in the next two years?

Implement a successful workforce development program within my organization for young people. This program focuses on the power of making using STEAM concepts. We will also emphasize the power of non-traditional, non-linear, paths to achieving career goals.
What are your biggest challenges?

Exposing young people in Colorado to maker culture in a way that sparks their interest. We also want them to feel inspired to experiment and see their mistakes as learning opportunities.

What is one thing about you that would surprise people?

I think people would be surprised because my personal interests are so diverse. I like to dabble in all kinds of creative projects. I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and experiment with something new!
